Dr Me Talk and Brief

Dr Me came in for a talk which was extremely beneficial. They specialise in record labels, editorial magazine, collage and most recently video. They started when they got an internship with Mike Perry - illustration,
he suggested that they should make work to get work and build a website and have a buisnesscard etc very early on so that they could get recognised. It's who you know Drme started, don't be afraid to tell people who you are about / what your works about. Its about making connections - gaining friendship and if you stay friends, it will be beneficial father down the line. Also they mention to not throw stuff out - as it will come back and you can bring it into new work.

The studio space is very important you can create a mess, chill and be excitement by the environment. Sharing a studio space is not that expensive.

Write a list of unachievable goals  / improbable goals to see if you can get it. Don't say NO, Learn through play.

The brief was to create a flag - in any shape of form to be excited on the 13th Decemeber.

Inspire Action into Design : Magazine Development

Using the photographs given to me i based the front design as very contemporary - I also used layout samples i had created from my design sheets.

Creating an interesting and contemporary outlook on the magazine. The creation of the design was decided to take a simple approach and works as a stylish cover design. Although it news to inspire so the content and photography should emphasis this. This will need to be formatted through layout and type also.

Creating the content to look similar to the front - simple and clear. Although i do believe that this design takes up a lot of space an is extremely text heavy.

Developing the Content page:

Using the same images that correlate to the front cover to introduce a theme. The contents feels less busy with two 'header' images. Followed then, by the type and list format.

The design needs to be developed and the articles within the sections could highlight elements of inspiration and fun, but for the first few pages the design needs to focus on the clear simple, easy to understand format and the front needs to be simple, interesting and stylish.

Content Photography for Inspire Action - Brief 01

Magazine Photography :

Photograhs : Karla Stevens
Film : Britt Llyod
Model : Bolagi Osun

The images were given to me to place into my magazine : I will use them to highlight the creators of the shoot and to portray a current trend within fashion also they are creative photographs to add in with interviews one on one with the creators of the shoot which should give an insight into the prep and shoot itself hopefully inspiring creatives from disciplines.

Development and Final Design of Class Brief - Christmas

Following the brief - set by Lizzi - I went away and focused on my given project:

Home Alone (One) - Film
Red - Colour

Thinking of Homealone there is a main character - A young boy - this automatically allows you to tell the theme from his point of view - his handwriting - speech - content and layout can be seen from a 'child like' point of view.

Quotes & Design Sheet:

Development of Idea:
Using hand rendered typography to highlight and portray 'Kevin's' (young child) youth and age.

The layout of the postcard needed to translate the message that Kevin would say - so from his point of view.

The type on it's own works well to describe and portray 'speech' and 'youth' :

Experimentation with quotes and layout seems to indicatd speech but the design can be arranged in a clear and well presented format.

Final design:

If i had more time I would develop the type and the layout so that I could push the concept further.

Condiment Development : Illustration Type & Layout

Condiment Development : Illustration Type & Layout

Using hand rendered type created on illustrator creating a traditional aesthetic but with a slight modernistic edge. The designs need to focus more on the brand identity. These are not the final images but create a basis to develop from.

The Jar that simply places image and type above is quite modern as well as home-made and traditional. The idea of using vinyl on a clear glass could give the product an edge and work well. Although the design would only work on specific jar but would give an edge on supermarket shelfs and stalls.

Starting with Mint : Keeping in a illustrative theme. The type looks and is hand rendered. This allows for the home made approach to be portrayed though the imagery and type. The image is a basic outline of a mint leaf and is placed in different positions to try and gather the best design.

Combing and creating a set/series: illustrations have to all work as one and continue with the same 'style' of 'sketchy' and minimal. Whilst trying to do this however I've discovered that the design can look too scruffy and do not work as they take on a messy not hand rendered approach.

Labels : Simple and Effective: (in some cases)

I have found that the design works well for selected condiments only. For instance the lemon and mint designs work quite well where as the chilli design seems to adopt the 'scruffy' approach and doesn't work as well in terms of layout on the jar. I kind of wanted to create the same scale of design for each condiment - but i don't know wether it will work as well as i originally thought.

The designs / Feedback :

The designs do work as a set and the colours relate to the product but i got some feedback from peers and they said the following:

The designs work well
Some of the designs work really well such as Jam and Mint but others such as onion and chilli look very childish and scruffy 0 so it looks like less design has gone into them.

This is because the phrases and names of the condiments are longer - so it is harder to compress to fit orderly and functionally.

I feel that these designs need to be improved a lot and gain a similar approach to allow for the range to look professional, home-made and creatively minialimalistic, stylish and contemporary.
